Green To The Core

December 01, 2011

KML is committed to furthering the production of composite core panels using formaldehyde-free adhesives and other ultra-low emitting resin properties. As a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified company and provider of CARB, GREENGUARD and E-Gen certified overlays, KML continues its dedication to responsible manufacturing of 100% pre-consumer recycled wood fiber to help our customers achieve LEED project points.

What goes into a green certification?

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) sets certain high standards to make sure companies practice environmentally responsible and socially beneficial forestry. When a thermo-fused melamine panel is “FSC Certified,” it means the manufacturer constructed the panel from and used requirements enforced by the Forest Stewardship Council.

California Air Resources Board (CARB) sets strict compliances that limit formaldehyde emissions from particleboard, medium density fiberboard (MDF) and hardwood plywood sold in California, one of the largest markets for panels.

GREENGUARD is a product certification program overseen by the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute. The Institute presently provides the world's only guide to third-party certified low emitting interior products and building materials. All GREENGUARD certified products undergo quarterly indoor quality performance testing according to stringent environmental testing protocols and meet current indoor air quality standards.

The Environmental Preferable Product (EPP) certification ensures composite panel products contain 100% recycled or recovered fiber and meet low formaldehyde emission standards. The EPP is a certification through the Composite Panel Associate (CPA), which maintains industry product standards to advance wood-based panel and decorative surfacing industries in North America.

Veneer Core Lends Strength to Design

October 19, 2011

Veneer core melamine panels lend strength and stability to design projects. The alternating stacked construction of softwood veneer plies with high-density fiberboard (HDF) that make the substrate provides superior durability and screw-holding capabilities along with increased spanning strength between supports.

Veneer core panels are relatively lighter then composite panels while still maintaining durability not found with thinner face veneers. Using HDF also provides a smooth surface for thermo-fusing and prevents telegraphing. KML veneer core panels are available to be compliant with CARB, FSC or LEED regulations. KML’s 800+ melamine designs options coupled with veneer core substrates give designers and specifiers more ability to create earth-friendly looks that adapt to current design trends.
